Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 November 2026
Quext is a macOS app that looks up, checks and translates text you select. This policy explains what data Quext handles, why, and what you can do about it. Quext is currently a free, invite-only beta run by Igor Garybaldi (“we”, “us”), who is responsible for your data.
The text you send
When you press the Quext shortcut, the selected or copied text is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, which passes it to OpenAI to produce the result and returns the result to your Mac. Your language settings are sent with it so the answer comes back in the right languages.
We do not store your text or the results. They are not written to our database or to our logs. OpenAI processes the text under its API terms: it does not use API data to train its models and may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse before deleting it.
What we store
- Your tester account: the name we gave your invite (usually your first name), the invite code and when you activated it.
- A device identifier: a one-way hash of your Mac’s hardware ID. It ties your invite code to one Mac and can’t be turned back into the ID.
- A device token: kept in your Mac’s Keychain; we store only a hash of it, to recognise your requests.
- Usage records, one per request: the time, the mode (Look up, Check, Dictionary or Translate), the app version, the model, the number of tokens used, the cost, whether it succeeded, and how long it took. These let us keep to the monthly limits, plan the costs and fix problems.
Our hosting providers also keep short-lived technical logs (such as IP addresses and request times) to run and protect their services.
What we don’t do
- No advertising, no selling or sharing data for marketing.
- No analytics or tracking in the app, and no cookies on this website.
- Quext reads only the text you select or copy when you press the shortcut. It does not read your screen or other apps.
Who processes the data
- Cloudflare runs our server and database.
- OpenAI produces the results from your text.
- Vercel hosts this website and the app downloads and updates. The app checks it for updates once a day.
These providers are based in the United States. Transfers of personal data from the EU rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
Why we process it
We use this data to provide the service you asked for (the contract between us), and for our legitimate interests in keeping the service secure, preventing abuse and keeping costs within the beta’s limits.
How long we keep it
Your account and usage records are kept while your account exists. When you delete your data, or when we close your account or end the beta, they are deleted.
Your rights
You can delete your account and all its records at any time in Quext → Settings → Account → Delete my data. “Disconnect this Mac” signs the Mac out without deleting anything.
You may also ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to restrict or object to its processing, or to delete it, by writing to hello@garybaldi.xyz. If you are in the EU, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority.
Children
Quext is not intended for anyone under 16.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date above. If a change affects how your data is used, we will let you know in the app before it takes effect.
